Torsion & Extension Springs

Most garage door spring installations include one of two types of springs. First is the "torsion" spring. A torsion spring installation is normally mounted above the door frame on the header in a horizontal position. There are two springs mounted right and left of center on the assembly. The force applied to the door is from the winding force of the springs.

Second is the "extension" spring. Extension springs are mounted either horizontally over a horizontal track or they are mounted vertically at either side of the door. The force applied to the door is derived from the extension or stretching of the spring.

These springs apply an enormous amount of tension to the garage door. Servicing these springs requires knowledge and special tools. In order to avoid serious personal injury, we recommend that installation and service of garage door springs be left to a professional.

If your springs are in need of service or replacement, this should be addressed right away. Worn or damaged springs can be a safety hazard and will also downgrade the performance of your overhead door system.
